Last Saturday you could have caught me at WordCamp Fraser Valley 2009 (tagged #wcfv). I was there representing Out-Smarts, as we sponsored the event.
Let me introduce the concept for those who are unfamiliar with the xyzCamp concept. WhateverCamp is a common way of labeling an event around “Whatever” – whatever comes before “Camp”. Thus, WordCamp is usually a day-long event around WordPress, a popular blogging tool.
We were happy to sponsor an event like #wcfv. In Vancouver these kinds of events bring out very talented people. This time we heard presentations from social media personalities including Rebecca Bollwitt (www.miss604.com) and Raul Pacheco (www.hummingbird604) among others.
I was able to meet good people, as usual. On that note, these events are where people who meet online solidify relationships. Make them real. Many people compare social media with online dating, it’s pointless to have 5 girlfriends online if don’t meet them face-to-face.
I strongly suggest you take advantage of these events to connect with people. There are xyzCamps all over the world like VinoCamp, DrunkCamp, BarCamp, NerdCamp, etc. There are Tweetups like VancouverTweetUp, BostonTweetUp. There are Meetups like the one I organize Vancouver SEO Meetup Group, and many other excuses to get together. (I don’t do flash-mobs, though.)
I’ve blogged about what was said on #wcfv on the Out-Smarts blog.
