I recently came over the silliest of “misunderstandings” with Google Analytics. One of our teams was puzzled by the GA’s Default Channel Grouping setting: Email. The problem was that, even though they were setting their email campaigns medium to “Email”, they were not showing in the expected channel grouping. Instead these campaigns were listed in “Other”. For days I thought, “hm, that’s matches the Default Channel description, surely it’s a bug.” Alas, it wasn’t a bug. I check the Channel Grouping definition page and found the problem.

GA has always differentiated between upper and lower case for medium, sources, etc.. In fact, every time I delived GA training sessions, many people had “aha moments” when going over this point. For Cannel Groupings, however, seems the whole idea was to group a set of channels for easy analysis. If the spirit of this was to make things easier for the users, then it feels they should have considered grouping both Email and email. I’m sure they will make this fix. But for now, keep an eye on your campaigns if you’re not using a Lowercase filter. You may be missing out.
