A few moments ago I posted the article below on LinkedIn. It is my first time creating an article on LinkedIn, rather than posting writings from here. While I am not a fan of creating articles in platforms I don’t control, I am curious on the effects.
The complete article can be found here:
How long are jeans supposed to last? I would say most of us who wear jeans on a regular basis have pondered over this question at some point in our lives. By no means do I consider myself an expert in jeans or the brand American Eagle, but considering my purchase history of about 10 years on ae.com I have evidence to support an answer.
For most of my life I had two consistent answers for this question, one from my friend Scott, who went on the deep end on the jeans topic – “not jeans, denim” he would say. He always said, “a good pair of jeans should last you 10 years at least!” Of course, I don’t source jeans from wherever obscure niche store jeans enthusiast source jeans; and I will never have the level of care and ritualistic processes – sometimes going for days – regarding jeans care. So, let’s say Scott is… special.
The other answers vary, but they always start with, “I have no idea…” That’s from pretty much everyone else.
For those of you who’ve had this question, here is an answer: about two years. This seems to be the case for American Eagle jeans.
My Purchase History
I wear jeans for most of my days, working in an office environment. I also go to the park and outdoor activities, but I’m no Rambo-style survivalist. For that level of jeans, perhaps I can put you in touch with Scott.
As a tall fellow (36” length), I have limited selection when it comes to clothes. Since AE jeans fit quite nicely, I have been buying jeans from EA online for 10 years. Not that I refuse to wear anything else, but AE jeans are nicely priced, AE.com Canada (go Canada!) ships to Japan, I can’t find anything in stores here, and there is no need to experiment with other brands just yet…
Common AE.com, Make Me An Offer
As a digital analytics and marketing professional I am a bit offended that AE has not sent me some kind of coupon, cupcakes or any festive paraphernalia. They must know about how long their jeans last. They know their frequent buyers – or at least now they know about me. Based on their site dataLayer, they seem to have the potential to track detailed product information.
Ok. Ok. Maybe I don’t splurge, but if I bet AE could have upsold me if they just tried – even just a little. If too complicated, feel free to hire me to help you guys plan and execute this. I can’t be the only one in this boat of relevant marketing neglect.
On a side note, kudos to Duer for a superb ranking on Google when it comes to searching for this question. I would try you guys out but you only go till 34” length.
There. Now I wait.
